Photo journalism is an extremely difficult genre of photography. By its very nature it requires the photographer to attend difficult and dangerous situations. My experience includes three conflict areas; Kitale Refugee Camp, North Kivu, D.R. Congo (Zaire) following the Rwandan genocide in 1994; as a member of the Canadian Forensic Team serving with the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (I.C.T.Y.) in southern Kosovo, 1999; and as a representative of the Board of Directors for the Gurkha Welfare Trust (Canada) throughout rural Nepal during the ten year civil war (1998, 2001, & 2005). In addition, the majority of my thirty-five year career with the Toronto Police Service was as an investigator with Forensic Identification Services.
As could be expected, these experiences provided many examples of extreme violence and inhumanity. However, the resilience of people to overcome hardship was also apparent. The necessity to document conflict and resolution has never been more relevant.
